About Haggart Observatory

The observatory is named for Harold Haggart, a professional telescope builder. Its dome and drive assembly date to 1948 and were donated by his widow, Darcy Haggart. The facility opened in 1989, built through community donations and volunteer labour.

History

The 1948 dome and drive assembly sat unused until Darcy Haggart's donation gave the community college a foundation to build around, culminating in the observatory's 1989 opening.

Telescopes & research

Inside the dome is a 24-inch Newtonian reflector telescope. An adjoining observing deck, 45 feet above the ground and six feet wide, holds portable telescopes for additional viewing. The Rose City Astronomers partner with the college to offer public viewing sessions several times a year.

The observatory is part of Clackamas Community College's campus in Oregon City, Oregon, a short drive south of Portland.
