About this observatory

Aniane Astronomical Observatory is located in Aniane, Hérault, in southern France's Occitanie region. Founded in 1976 by pioneering amateur astronomer Pierre Bourge, it became recognized as the most important amateur observatory in France (excluding professional facilities) during the 1990s.

History

Pierre Bourge established the observatory in 1976, directing it until 1982. The facility was later managed by the Arts and Astres association but ceased operations in 2001. In 2006, it was revived under new management and is now operated as Astronarium, transformed into a thematic observation park with seven domes and unique overnight accommodations.

Location & getting there

Situated near the UNESCO Global Geopark in the Mediterranean scrubland of Occitanie, Aniane is approximately 30 minutes by car from Montpellier. The region features dramatic limestone formations and the medieval village of Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert nearby. The elevated location benefits from darker skies away from major urban centers.

Visiting Aniane Observatory

Astronarium offers guided observations of the sun, planets, and stars with telescopes, introductory and advanced training courses, and public observation evenings. Private events for companies, schools, and associations are available. Visitors can stay overnight in themed accommodations for an immersive astronomy experience.
