Andromeda Astronomical Observatory is a modern astronomical facility located in Sofia, Bulgaria, established in 2014 at an elevation of 843 meters. It serves as a research and observation center for amateur and professional astronomy.
About Andromeda Observatory
The observatory was founded by the Astronomical Association Sofia (AAS), an organization of astronomers dedicated to advancing astronomical education and research in Bulgaria. The facility brings together experienced observers and equipment for both research and public outreach activities.
Telescopes & research
The primary instrument is a PlaneWave CDK 17-inch telescope with a 432mm aperture, housed in a Homedome HD10 dome (3-meter diameter). The telescope is mounted on a 10Micron GM 4000 HPS German equatorial mount with absolute axis encoders, controllable via handheld remote or computer. Imaging equipment includes an Apogee ALTA U16M CCD camera and Canon 50D digital camera for detailed observations and astrophotography.
Location & getting there
Situated in Sofia, Bulgaria's capital and largest city, the observatory benefits from the region's relatively clear mountain air at 843 meters elevation. Sofia is easily accessible by road and rail, and the elevated location helps reduce light pollution for better observations.
Visiting Andromeda Observatory
For information about visiting hours, public observation programs, or guided tours, check the official website or contact the observatory directly. Many astronomy facilities in Bulgaria welcome visitors during scheduled observation events.
See your named star from here
The PlaneWave telescope at Andromeda Observatory can be directed to any celestial coordinates in the sky, making it ideal for locating a named star. If you own coordinates from Star Register, discover how to find your star and explore our star catalogue.
Opening hours and public-visit programs vary by season. Check the official website and Google Maps for current times before you travel.
