The Al-Khatim Observatory is the first robotic observatory of its kind in the UAE, representing a significant investment in automated astronomy research. Its remote operation capabilities allow continuous observation and rapid response to astronomical events and phenomena.

Telescopes & Research

Operating cutting-edge robotic telescope systems, Al-Khatim Observatory conducts photometric and astrometric observations. In June 2024, the observatory officially joined the TESS Follow-up Observing Programme (TFOP), an international collaboration coordinated by MIT. The facility contributes to exoplanet discovery and has participated in monitoring newly discovered asteroids to support planetary defence and space situational awareness efforts. Notable achievements include capturing a striking image of the Witch Head Nebula following a 39-hour imaging session.

The observatory is situated in the Abu Dhabi desert, providing excellent conditions for continuous observation with minimal light pollution and stable atmospheric conditions. The remote desert location ensures clear skies throughout most of the year.

As a fully robotic facility dedicated to research operations, Al-Khatim Observatory does not offer traditional public viewing programmes.
