The Addis Ababa Geophysical Observatory was formally established in 1957 and began scientific operations in 1958. It was created in response to international agreements made during the 1957 convention on the International Geophysical Year (IGY) in Rome, recognising the scientific value of operating a magnetic observatory along the Earth's magnetic equator.

Equipment includes an IPGP VM391 vector magnetometer - a ring-core, three-axis fluxgate magnetometer designed to minimise interference from human activities and environmental magnetic disturbances.

The observatory has supported extensive geomagnetic research, including secular variation studies, equatorial electrojet phenomena investigations, and geomagnetic field modelling that informs space weather forecasting and planetary magnetosphere understanding.
