Wezen star

Wezen is the luminous, distant supergiant that marks the hindquarters of the Great Dog. Although it looks modest beside nearby Sirius, its true output is enormous: distance has reduced one of Canis Major's intrinsically brightest stars to an ordinary-looking point.

What kind of star is Wezen?

Wezen, catalogued as Delta Canis Majoris (δ CMa), appears in the official constellation Canis Major. Its apparent visual magnitude is about 1.84, while its estimated distance is about 1,600 light-years; parallax distance is uncertain. Astronomers classify the object as F8 Ia yellow-white supergiant. These labels describe temperature, luminosity class or system components; they should not be read as a claim that every naked-eye point is a single isolated star.

Wezen is an evolved, high-mass F-type supergiant with a swollen photosphere and far greater luminosity than the Sun. It has already left the hot main sequence and is crossing a comparatively brief phase of massive-star evolution, so published mass, age and distance estimates depend noticeably on evolutionary models and parallax treatment. Its F8 spectrum is cooler than those of blue stars such as Adhara and Mirzam, producing a pale yellow-white appearance. Spectroscopy of supergiants like Wezen probes atmospheric turbulence, chemical mixing and mass loss. It should not be described as physically close to Sirius merely because both stars form Canis Major on our sky: their apparent pattern is a line-of-sight projection across very different distances.

The name Wezen

Wezen comes from Arabic al-wazn, meaning “weight.” The same root appears in several historical star names, so the IAU-standardized proper name is important when distinguishing Delta Canis Majoris from similarly named stars.

Delta Canis Majoris belonged to the large dog figure inherited by Greek astronomy and catalogued by Ptolemy. Bayer assigned its Greek-letter designation in Uranometria in 1603. The traditional Arabic name survived through manuscript and catalogue traditions before the IAU Working Group on Star Names standardized “Wezen” for this star, separating a proper name from the many spellings found in older atlases.

Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.

How to find Wezen

Start at Sirius, then trace the lower body of Canis Major southeast through Adhara toward Wezen. To unaided eyes it is a steady second-magnitude point; binoculars place it in a rich southern Milky Way field and make the Dog's extended outline much easier to follow.

Visible from most inhabited latitudes and best during northern winter or southern summer; it culminates much higher from the Southern Hemisphere. Visibility on a particular night still depends on latitude, season, time, horizon obstructions, weather and local light pollution.
