From Arabic al-shawlah, “the raised tail,” referring to the upturned sting of the celestial Scorpion. The IAU assigns Shaula specifically to Lambda Scorpii Aa.

Shaula's tail-based name fits the classical Scorpion outline shared through Greek and Arabic astronomical traditions. In Polynesian navigation, stars in this southern Milky Way region belonged to different indigenous patterns, so the Scorpion is not universal.
