The name Merak
Merak derives from Arabic al-marāqq, “the loins” or “flank” of the bear. It occupies the lower outer corner of the Big Dipper’s bowl.
The Arabic-derived name identifies the Great Bear’s flank; European observers later grouped Merak with Dubhe as the Pointers. That navigation convention became more famous than the anatomical origin. Twentieth-century measurements of stellar motion showed that Merak travels with most of the Dipper’s central stars. Infrared astronomy then added a circumstellar dimension, revealing cold dust around an object long treated mainly as a geometric signpost.
Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.
How to find Merak
Merak is the lower of the Dipper’s two Pointer Stars. Draw the line from Merak upward through Dubhe and continue it across a mostly empty field to Polaris. Binoculars show the surrounding bowl but cannot resolve the star’s circumstellar dust.
