What kind of star is Enif?

Enif, catalogued as Epsilon Pegasi (ε Peg), appears in the official constellation Pegasus. Its apparent visual magnitude is about 2.39; slightly variable, while its estimated distance is roughly 690 light-years; parallax uncertain. Astronomers classify the object as K2 Ib–II. These labels describe temperature, luminosity class or system components; they should not be read as a claim that every naked-eye point is a single isolated star.

Epsilon Pegasi is an evolved K-type bright giant or low-luminosity supergiant. SIMBAD's small parallax suggests a distance near 690 light-years, but fractional uncertainty is substantial, so luminosity and radius estimates inherit that uncertainty. Enif began life considerably more massive than the Sun and has expanded and cooled after leaving the main sequence. Its brightness shows low-amplitude irregular or semiregular changes associated with a large convective atmosphere. Occasional reports of sudden flares in historical visual records are difficult to reconcile with modern stellar physics and are not treated as established eruptive behaviour. A faint visual companion is visible in larger amateur telescopes, but it contributes negligibly to the naked-eye point.

The coordinate pair RA 21h 44m 11.16s, Dec +09° 52′ 30.0″ fixes the object's direction on the celestial sphere for the J2000 reference epoch. Right ascension works like celestial longitude measured in hours, while declination works like latitude north or south of the celestial equator. The name Enif

From Arabic al-anf, “the nose,” exactly matching the star's position on the winged horse's muzzle.

The Arabic “nose” name survived because its position in Pegasus is unambiguous. Bayer nevertheless assigned it Epsilon, while its mean visual brightness rivals or exceeds the Alpha and Beta stars. Enif also became embedded in amateur observing culture as the most convenient bright signpost to globular cluster Messier 15. Stories of spectacular short-lived flares entered later popular accounts, but the weak historical evidence means they should be presented as reports rather than confirmed events.

Modern professional catalogues retain identifiers such as the Bayer designation alongside a proper name. The International Astronomical Union standardizes which name belongs to which component—an important distinction for systems whose combined light looks like one star from Earth.

How to find Enif

Find the Great Square, then follow Pegasus westward to its nose. From Enif, move roughly four degrees northwest to M15. Binoculars show the cluster as a tiny haze; a telescope begins to resolve its concentrated halo under dark skies.
