The name Denebola

Denebola comes from Arabic dhanab al-asad, “tail of the lion.” It is one of several star names beginning with Deneb, a clue that each originally marked the tail of a different celestial creature.

The Lion is among the ancient zodiacal figures, and Arabic astronomers preserved a practical anatomical label for its tail. Bayer assigned the star Beta Leonis even though brightness rankings can depend on passband and comparison. Denebola also marks one corner of the historical Spring Triangle in some modern observing guides, alongside Arcturus and Spica, although triangle membership is an informal asterism rather than an official designation.
