About this observatory

Yellowstone Volcano Observatory (YVO) is not a telescope site but a volcano-monitoring organisation dedicated to tracking the Yellowstone Caldera within Yellowstone National Park, United States.

About Yellowstone Volcano Observatory

Founded in 2001 and led by the U.S. Geological Survey, YVO's jurisdiction extends beyond Yellowstone itself to volcanic centers in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. It is funded through the USGS Volcano Hazards Program.

History

YVO operates as a partnership of nine member agencies: the EarthScope Consortium, Idaho Geological Survey, Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, Montana State University, the National Park Service, the University of Utah, the University of Wyoming, the Wyoming State Geological Survey, and Yellowstone National Park itself.

Location & getting there

The observatory's monitoring focus is centred on Yellowstone National Park, spanning parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho in the North America region.

Visiting Yellowstone Volcano Observatory

YVO is a scientific monitoring organisation rather than a visitor site, though Yellowstone National Park itself welcomes millions of visitors each year. Check the official YVO website or the National Park Service for current information.
