About Stardome Observatory

Formally known by the IAU observatory code 467 and previously called Auckland Observatory, Stardome is a public astronomical observatory and planetarium built specifically for exploration, research, and sharing astronomy with visitors. It has operated from its site in One Tree Hill Domain continuously since 1967.

History

Stardome's story starts in 1948, when the Auckland Astronomical Society began raising funds for a public observatory. By 1956 the society had enough, including a significant bequest from Edith Winstone Blackwell earmarked for a telescope for public use, and formed the Auckland Observatory and Planetarium Trust Board to build and run it. In 1960, the One Tree Hill Borough Council granted a 21-year lease for the Domain site, later extended, and the observatory opened its doors in March 1967.

Stardome is set within one of Auckland's best-known parks, close to the city yet elevated enough on One Tree Hill to give clear views over the surrounding suburbs. Its position in New Zealand's Oceania region makes it a rare easy-access public observatory for a major Southern Hemisphere city.
