About R. F. Joyce Observatory
R. F. Joyce Observatory is owned and run by the Canterbury Astronomical Society (CAS). It takes its name from R. F. Joyce, a founding member and former president of the society, whose bequest made the observatory possible.
Telescopes & research
The site's main instrument is a 16" Meade RCX400, backed up by a 14.5" Cassegrain telescope, two 11" Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes and a 120mm refractor. Roll-off roof structures and electrically driven domes house the instruments, alongside a warm room, a lodge building and grassed terraces for members and visitors.

The observatory sits near West Melton, roughly 40 minutes' drive from the Christchurch CBD, New Zealand. An active light pollution control policy agreed with the Selwyn District Council keeps its skies notably dark for its proximity to the city.
