About this observatory

In the Daedeok area of Daejeon, South Korea, this OWL-Net observatory doubles as the nerve center for a satellite-tracking network that spans five continents.

About OWL-Net Observatory, Daedeok

The station is run by the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI), whose headquarters at 776 Daedeokdae-ro, Yuseong-gu, Daejeon, controls and coordinates all five OWL-Net observatories worldwide. A Network Scheduling System generates the daily observation commands sent out to every station in the network, including this one.

Telescopes & research

Like its counterparts in Israel, Mongolia, Morocco, and elsewhere in South Korea, the Daedeok station is built around a 0.5-metre Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a 4K CCD camera, part of the OWL-Net system dedicated to tracking Korean satellites and space debris.

Location & getting there

The observatory is located in the Daedeok area of Daejeon, in South Korea's technology-research heartland, within Asia. Use the map on this page for exact directions.

Visiting OWL-Net Observatory, Daedeok

As KASI's operational hub for a scientific satellite-tracking network, the site is not set up as a general tourist attraction; those with a specific interest should contact KASI directly for current visiting information.

A facility built to coordinate the tracking of moving satellites is also a fitting place to think about the fixed position of a star you have named through Star Register. Check its exact coordinates in the star catalogue.
