Perched at the highest point on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus, Orchard Hill Observatory has offered students and the local community a window on the night sky since the mid-1960s.
About Orchard Hill Observatory
Orchard Hill Observatory is a red brick building topped with a dome, located at the highest point of the UMass Amherst campus. It houses a 16-inch Cassegrain reflector optical telescope and is used for community events as well as university programmes.
History
The observatory was constructed in 1965. It originally housed a 20-inch telescope, which was later decommissioned after its mirror was damaged during re-aluminizing; the current 16-inch Cassegrain reflector was in place by fall 1984.
Telescopes & research
Today the observatory's 16-inch Cassegrain reflector is used primarily for public and educational viewing, maintained by the UMass Astronomy Department with support from the Five College Astronomy Club.

The observatory sits on the University of Massachusetts Amherst campus, at its highest point, making it a landmark visible from much of the surrounding area.
