The observatory uses a 0.5-metre reflector fitted with a CCD camera and reports its findings under the observatory code X74. Its work targets asteroids in the southern sky that fall outside the coverage of major northern-hemisphere survey telescopes.

In 2019, Campo dos Amarais received a Shoemaker NEO Grant from the Planetary Society, an award that supports amateur and small-observatory contributions to near-Earth object discovery and monitoring.
