About this observatory

Calf of Man Bird Observatory sits on the Calf of Man, a small, rocky islet off the southwest coast of the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea.

About Calf of Man Bird Observatory

Ornithological recording on the islet began in 1959, and the site was officially recognised as a bird observatory in 1962. It is based in a former farmhouse and is jointly operated by the Manx Wildlife Trust and Manx National Heritage, with appointed wardens carrying out the observatory's work each season.

History

The observatory has tracked migratory birds passing through the Irish Sea for more than six decades, building one of the Isle of Man's longest-running wildlife monitoring records.

Location & getting there

The Calf of Man is a 616-acre islet off the southwest tip of the Isle of Man, within the Europe region, reachable only by boat and cut off from the mainland's light and noise.

Visiting Calf of Man Bird Observatory

The observatory is open seasonally, from spring to autumn each year. Details on crossings and current access should be checked with the Manx BirdLife website before planning a visit.

See your named star from here

This observatory is dedicated to watching birds rather than stars, but its isolated island setting, far from mainland light, makes the surrounding night sky worth a look too. A named star keeps the same fixed coordinates wherever you are, including on the Calf of Man. Browse our star-naming packages or the star catalogue to name your own.

Opening hours

Opening hours and public-visit programs vary by season. Check the official website and Google Maps for current times before you travel.
