About Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory

The observatory was first built in 1985 and formally established in 1996 near Yeongcheon. It houses a 1.8-metre reflecting telescope, Korea's largest optical instrument and the third-largest telescope in the country.

Telescopes & research

Facilities on site include a dedicated optical telescope building, a separate solar telescope building, and a visitor centre, giving the observatory both a serious research role and a public-facing side.

Visiting Bohyunsan Optical Astronomy Observatory

The observatory holds public viewing events on the fourth Saturday of April, May, June, September, and October, including astronomy lectures and 20-minute tours of both the optical and solar telescope buildings.
