the dragon · pronounced DRAY-koh. Draco winds around Ursa Minor in the far northern sky, forming a long chain between the Big and Little Dippers. Much of it is circumpolar from mid-northern latitudes, so the constellation can be followed throughout the year, with its head highest on summer evenings. Ptolemy catalogued Draco among the ancient 48, and Greek authors linked it with several dragons, most commonly Ladon, guardian of the Hesperides’ golden apples. Thuban was the pole star near 2700 BCE because Earth’s rotational axis slowly precesses; Polaris holds that role today, and the pole will continue to shift. Eltanin is now Draco’s brightest star and anchors its compact head. The constellation contains the Cat’s Eye Nebula, whose intricate shells trace repeated mass loss from a dying star, and numerous remote galaxies including the edge-on Spindle Galaxy. The annual Draconid meteors radiate from its direction and can occasionally surge. Draco’s IAU boundary defines a large astronomical region; the dragon outline is a historical selection of stars, not a physical object or universal cultural map.
