the southern cross · pronounced KRUKS. Crux is the smallest of the 88 IAU constellations yet one of the most culturally and navigationally prominent. Four bright stars form the Southern Cross, with Acrux at its foot and Gacrux at its top. Extending the long axis roughly four and a half times from Gacrux through Acrux gives a practical estimate of the south celestial pole; the nearby Pointer stars in Centaurus help distinguish the true Cross from larger look-alikes. European navigators separated Crux from Centaurus during the age of southern exploration, although these stars were visible farther north in antiquity and occur in many Indigenous southern-sky traditions. The dark Coalsack Nebula borders the Cross, while the Jewel Box cluster displays strongly contrasting stellar colours in a small telescope. Crux appears on several national flags and carries meanings far beyond the Greco-European figure. Its IAU boundary and the familiar four-star asterism are not identical: the official constellation includes additional stars and deep-sky objects. From tropical northern latitudes it remains low; across the Southern Hemisphere it can be circumpolar.
